Frequently Asked Questions

Is rheumatoid arthritis the same as osteoarthritis?
No. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease caused by wear and tear, predominantly in older adults, affecting cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that can affect people at any age, driven by immune system activity, and responds to immunosuppressive treatment. The treatments, causes, and prognosis are fundamentally different.

Can RA be cured?
There is no cure for RA, but remission — complete control of disease activity — is achievable and increasingly common with modern treatment. Some patients in sustained remission can cautiously taper medications under specialist supervision.

Will I end up in a wheelchair?
With modern treat-to-target therapy, severe disability from RA is far less common than it was 20–30 years ago. Most patients treated promptly maintain normal or near-normal function. The key is early diagnosis and consistent treatment.

Can I continue working with RA?
Most people with well-controlled RA continue working. Workplace accommodations — flexible hours, ergonomic equipment, avoiding prolonged grip or fine motor tasks during flares — support continued employment. Occupational therapy input is valuable.

Does diet affect RA?
Diet does not cause or cure RA, but an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern may help manage symptoms. A Mediterranean-style diet, omega-3 fatty acids (from fish or walnuts), and minimising processed food and sugar are supported by moderate evidence. Some patients report symptom improvement after dietary changes, though this varies considerably between individuals.
